HISTORY

In 1915, a group of devoted Christians came together to establish a place of worship for the residents of the Klondike community in Memphis, TN. After careful planning and dedication from various individuals, Keel Avenue Missionary Baptist Church was founded. The church was named after its location, reflecting its strong connection to the Klondike community. The first religious services were held in a small room at 1193 Keel Avenue with the founding members: Mr. Walton Wooten, Mrs. Ella Wooten, Mr. A. Johnson, Mrs. Green, Mrs. Nolan, and Mrs. Carr. These dedicated individuals elected Rev. C. Thomas as their first pastor, and appointed Brother I. Rollins, Brother B.J. Whitby, Brother T. Carter, and Brother H.R. Land as deacons.

From 1916 to 1921, the small congregation grew along with the community, prompting church leaders to build a larger place of worship at 811 N. Bellevue. However, in 1923, a fire destroyed the church facility. Undeterred, the faithful members remained committed to their vision. A tract of land was generously donated to the church at the corner of Grant and Bellevue, and by 1925, a new building was erected.

Between 1916 and 1928, Keel Avenue Missionary Baptist Church was blessed with several gifted ministers, including Reverend C. Thomas, Reverend Maxwell, Reverend Davis, Reverend Mabon, and Reverend Hammond. After the passing of Pastor Hammond, Reverend J.F. Collins was called to serve, and under his leadership, the congregation experienced rapid growth.

Pastor Collins recognized the need to expand the church at its current location. Known today as "Old Keel Avenue," the facility had become too small, and the deacons sought ways to finance an expansion. Despite the hardships of the Great Depression and the devastating flood of 1937, the unwavering faith, determination, and strong sense of community among the members led to the construction of a new church.

In 1944, the church purchased property at 778 North Bellevue with the intention of building a new facility. It took six years of dedication and hard work, but in 1950, the congregation moved into their new church home. "Old Keel" still stands today as a testament to the journey and blessings the Lord has provided.

The late Reverend J.F. Collins served as pastor for 30 years, leading the church with great care and compassion. In December 1958, he was called home to rest. Following his passing, the congregation elected Reverend Perdy Moody as the new pastor, and he served faithfully until his retirement in 1994.

In 1994, the congregation elected Reverend Robert C. Jones, Jr., a dynamic preacher and teacher who has been leading Keel Avenue for over 31 years. Under his leadership, the church has continued to experience growth, expansion, and renovations while upholding the legacy of care and compassion established by previous leaders. As we celebrate 110 years of dedication to Keel Avenue Missionary Baptist Church, we give thanks for the journey and the many blessings we have received.

We have come this far by faith and with faith in our vision Keel Avenue Missionary Baptist Church will continue to be – A Body of Committed Disciples of Christ, Who are Keeping in Touch with God, by Using the Word to Preach, Teach, and Reach.
